The City of South Perth, with support from the Department of Transport through the Western Australian Bicycle Network Grants Program, is proposing to create a safe bike link route from the South Perth Foreshore (SPF) to Curtin University.

SAFE ACTIVE STREETS

  • Douglas Avenue (SPF to Mill Point Road)
  • Lawler Street (from intersection at Tate Street) to Elizabeth Street to meet Canning Highway

PROTECTED BIKE LANES

  • Tate Street (from Mill Point Road to Lawler Street)
  • Douglas Avenue and Hayman Road to Kent Street intersection

Please note that the intersection of Hayman Road with South Terrace, Douglas Avenue and George Street is a separate project, and is not part of this bike link route project.

We want to hear what you think about the bike link route draft concept design, which has been jointly funded by the Department of Transport and the City and is a high priority in our Joint Bike Plan (33.8MB) (developed with the Town of Victoria Park in 2018).

Feedback on the South Perth Foreshore to Curtin University Bike Link concept design closed in early June 2024.

Thank you to everyone who submitted their feedback and/or came along to one of our drop-in sessions.

All feedback has been considered by the project team and the concept design revised to take on board the feedback received where possible. The proposed changes include:

    • Douglas Avenue, north of Mill Point Road: install a speed hump to help reduce vehicle speed between the cycle crossing and Jubilee Street.
    • Tate Street between Lawler Street and Mill Point Road: convert this section of road to a Safe Active Street instead of a protected bi-directional bike lane, which allows for four additional parking bays.
    • Lawler Street between Tate Street and Angelo Street: reduce the number of speed humps from four to one, installing it midway between Tate Street and Angelo Street.
    • Douglas Avenue: the protected bike path buffer/kerbing will be intermittent, leaving large gaps for driveways and gaps opposite trees in the median strip in the middle of the road.

The feasibility study and concept design were jointly funded by the City and the Western Australian Bicycle Network (WABN) grants program 2023/2024. Unfortunately, the project does not qualify for the WABN grants program 2024/2025 so the project is on hold until appropriate funding can be sourced.

Thankyou again for your interest and participation. If you have any questions about the project, please use the ask a question tool to get in touch with a member of the project team or call 9474 0777.
