The City received a range of feedback on the Hurlingham playground expansion design and as a result has made some further improvements to make the playground more accessible.

The majority of feedback related to shade, the lack of an open slide, fencing and flooring and is outlined here:

    Feedback

    Outcome

    Will the shade sails remain?

Most of the new equipment will be located under the current shade sails.

The tube slide is good for older children but not as suitable for children who need assistance using slide

An open double slide has been added to the design. This will enable children with mobility needs and toddlers to use the equipment more independently.

Requests for the playground to be fenced to make it inclusive for some needs and disabilities

The City proposes to install a fence around the playground in the next financial year subject to approval in the 2022/23 budget by Council.

Rubber flooring is more accessible and less slippery

Sand is preferred to rubber flooring as it stays shock-absorbent for much longer. Local playgrounds, like Hurlingham playground, are designed to last for 30 years to provide value for money and a more sustainable playground.

However, a rubber flooring pathway has been included in the design from the bottom of the new open double slide to the edge of the grass. This will enable children with mobility needs and toddlers to use the equipment more independently and provide better access for parents and carers.

The current equipment and sandpit will remain and most of the new equipment will be located under the current shade sails.

The new equipment is currently being manufactured and is scheduled to be installed in winter 2022. All the new equipment will be integrated with the existing playground to provide an inclusive and welcoming play space for children of all abilities to play together.

Have a look at the final design.
