The City of South Perth is working with sport, leisure and recreation consultancy Otium Planning Group to look into what kind of cycling facilities and infrastructure could be provided in the future at George Burnett Park in Karawara. Whether you cycle for fun, fitness or as a means of transport, we want to hear from you.

The George Burnett Park Cycling Needs Assessment will investigate and identify stakeholder and community needs for cycling facilities and infrastructure at George Burnett Park.

Following a number of recommendations over the last few years, the City is proposing to build a pump track at George Burnett Park (subject to funding), but we’d like to know what else you would want to see there. Get involved and tell us what you think.

How can I get involved?

The survey closed at 4pm, Monday 3 July 2023.

The City received 573 responses with a broad range of feedback from the community, including local residents, park users, and cyclists from areas within and outside the City. The consultant developed recommendations based on survey feedback; relevant cycling strategic planning documents; an audit of cycling facilities and infrastructure in South Perth and adjoining local governments; demographic information; and consultation with stakeholders.

    Recommendations in priority order

    1. Pump Track
    2. Additional shared and separated paths
    3. BMX dirt track
    4. End of trip facilities and cycling parking facilities
    5. Learn to ride facility
    6. Event infrastructure.

We’re pleased to report that the first two priorities, the Pump Track project and additional shared and separated paths, have budgets allocated to them and are progressing.

Delivery of the other report recommendations will be subject to further investigations by the City. These projects will be considered in future annual budget development processes to determine the ability to source the required project funding (including through external funding sources); and will be assessed against other priority projects within the City’s capital works program.

The report also concluded that a criterium circuit and mountain bike circuit were not appropriate at George Burnett Park given the potential conflicts with other park users. Also e-bike charging stations were not supported.
