Why is this project happening?

There is currently no City-commissioned public art in Kensington, and the feedback we received from the Kensington community during the development of the Public Art Masterplan (PAMP) 2022-2025 (PDF, 9.2 MB) highlighted a desire for public art in the local area.

Moresby Street Hall and Reserve have presented a great opportunity for the City’s first public art commission in Kensington, funded through a cash-in-lieu contribution from the Como Hotel redevelopment project.

You can find out more about future public art plans for Kensington on page 30 of the PAMP.

Where will the mural and other artwork be?

The mural will be on the southern and eastern facades of Moresby Street Hall, which are the parts of the building that are most visible from Douglas Avenue and Moresby Street Reserve. The design will also be extended onto the pathways within the Reserve.

How is the mural being funded?

In 2019, the City received a cash-in-lieu contribution of $60,000 from the Como Hotel redevelopment project in fulfilment of the requirement to provide public art at the site under Policy P316 Developer Contributions to Public Art and Public Art Spaces (PDF, 758 KB). Moresby Street Reserve is situated less than 1km from the Como Hotel, so a public art outcome there is within the vicinity of the development site contributing the funds, in keeping with the Policy. The project is funded through this cash-in-lieu contribution.

How did you choose the artist to design and install the mural?

The City invited appropriate mural artists to submit an expression of interest to carry out the commission and a selection panel assessed those received against a range of selection criteria.

Renowned Western Australian artist George Domahidy was selected as a result of this process, and we’re very excited to work with him to deliver a mural for Moresby Street Hall and Reserve.

What will be happening at the workshop?

The workshop will be a fun, interactive and family-friendly session with artist George Domahidy. George will present his initial concept design, then participants can get involved in some hands-on art activities to help develop ideas for the design of the mural. No prior experience is required and all ages can participate.

Register to attend the workshop here and we’ll look forward to seeing you there.

How can I register for the workshop?
