The votes are in - Playground Design Option 2 has been chosen!

The City of South Perth is upgrading the playground in the northern end of Olives Reserve and would like your help to choose the new design to replace the existing equipment. We have shortlisted four options that meet our criteria for things like safety, quality, play value and site constraints and would like to know which one you and your children like the best.

The playground upgrade works will include:

  • The removal of all existing equipment, rubber softfall under the swing and the shade structure
  • A new shade structure over the main play equipment
  • New equipment installed in the same location as the old equipment
  • New sand softfall under the new swing

  • Share Can you please fully enclose the new off lead dog exercise park at Olives Reserve? This is a wonderful addition to our area and increases community spirit too, but is inadequate for many dog owners especially those with small dogs or still training their younger dogs and dogs have been seen running out of the dog park towards the road or the opposite park even with the partial fencing off. We cannot take our dogs to this park for these reasons so it being there kind of defeats the purpose for us. Other suburbs such as Nedlands and North Perth have fully enclosed dog exercise areas which work very well and this park could too if just modified a bit please. You will find more people within and even outside our area will utilise this park more if you do. Could you also erect a sign on the Olives Reserve playground side which alerts people that it's an on lead area and that no dogs are allowed within 5m of the playground, cause when you tell dog owners this is the law or regulations and there's no sign there telling them that they can get quite riled up at you, especially if they're going between the parks with their dogs. Some kids are scared of dogs and quite a few big dogs visit the park. on Facebook Share Can you please fully enclose the new off lead dog exercise park at Olives Reserve? Hi there, thank you for question. The upgrade to the southern section of Olives Reserve was intended to create a more user-friendly experience for all those who use the park, including local residents, families, people walking, exercising or socialising, commuters walking to and from from the train station, and people coming to walk and exercise their dogs. As an already designated dog off leash area, it was a great opportunity to include more dog-friendly features, such as the agility equipment and water bowls, while still maintaining an enjoyable experience for all other users of the reserve. As you may have already read in our response to the question asked previously, fencing has a significant cost, both for the initial installation and the ongoing maintenance, which is not something the project could accommodate while still achieving its other objectives.

Thanks for your suggestion – we will install a sign at Olives Reserve playground to encourage park users to comply with the dog restrictions.

  • Share In relation to the play area opposite Olive Reserve, I am curious why the area is not completely fenced in with a couple of gates at logical entry/exit points so that dogs and children can play completely safely and owners and parents can be relaxed. Additionally it appears the retic is not working well as the grass is dying. Hi there, thanks for your questions. There are a number of features of Olives Reserve that improve safety and reduce the chances of unwanted interaction between the northern and southern ends, including the signed speed limit of the street (50km/h), the cul-de-sac preventing through traffic, the size of the reserve, the fence and plantings along the freeway side, and the low fence and plantings along the entrance road to the car park delineating the two ends of the reserve.

In the southern end (the designated dog off leash area), dogs must be under the supervision and effective control of their owner at all times while off lead. Garden beds around the perimeter of the area are designed to act as informal barriers to discourage dogs from wandering out of the designated area. In addition, all dogs are to be on lead within 5m of a playground.

Installation of fencing at either end of the reserve would have been a significant cost for the projects, leading to less budget available for new features or equipment, as well as greater ongoing costs for maintenance.

Thanks for letting us know about the turf. The reticulation was upgraded as part of the project. The new turf in the southern end is being stressed by the hot weather, but we’ll keep monitoring it as summer progresses.

Thanks for your question. Yes, all options will be installed on sand, as per the existing equipment. The limestone border around the play equipment will be replaced and the existing sand will be sifted. The new swing will also be installed with new sand and a limestone border, after the existing rubber softfall is removed.

Unfortunately nature play and water play options were not possible within the budget available for this playground upgrade. Read this FAQ for more information about why nature play was not included.
