What is a parklet?
A parklet is generally described as an extension to an existing business or community space by the placement of a temporary outdoor structure for seating, dining and/or social use on a portion of the adjoining road in front of a premises. Typically, parklets are designed to be installed within existing parking spaces located directly in front of and the same width as the Premises to which it relates.
Who pays for the parklet?
All costs associated with the design, build, maintenance and approvals for a parklet are the full responsibility and cost of the applicant.
How long would the parklet be there?
Should the Parklet proceed, it is proposed to provide an initial 12 month trial term to the business owners of Nextdoor Restaurant and Olsen Butchers. Significant capital business investment is required in order to install a Parklet. The trial does not guarantee that the licence will be renewed, however, renewal is possible subject to the outcomes of the trial.
Does the City have a policy relating to parklets?
No, not at this stage. However, an action of the City’s Economic Development Plan (2023) is to develop policy and guidelines for the implementation of parklets. Feedback from the community will assist the City in the preparation of a draft Parklet Policy to provide guidance to local businesses on the types, design and location of parklets that would be supported by the City.
How has the City assessed the safety of this trial parklet?
The design and placement of this alfresco parklet have been assessed by the City’s Engineering, Environmental Health, and Building teams as presenting a low risk.
Angelo Street is a low-speed environment with on-street parking on both sides of the road. This parklet would be positioned over the top of two of the existing parking bays, making the impact of the parklet on the road environment similar to that of a parked car.
Construction would be conditional on the business owner obtaining a building permit to ensure the design complies with the Building Code of Australia, including accessibility standards.
How would the parklet impact on parking in the area?
The parklet is proposed to occupy two of the existing 24 on-street public parking bays on Angelo Street in the immediate area of the businesses between Coode Street and Norfolk Street. Should the parklet be approved, the City will continue to monitor and adjust on-street parking controls in the area if needed.
