Draft Local Planning Policy – Tree Retention
At the Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 23 July, City of South Perth Council decided not to adopt the draft Local Planning Policy – Tree Retention. View the City's website to find out more.
The City has prepared draft LPP – Tree Retention to require development approval to remove or undertake any tree-damaging activity to any tree on private property which meets the one or more of the following criteria:
- Is 8.0m or more in height
- has an average canopy diameter of at least 6.0m
- has a trunk circumference of at least 1.5m, measured 1.4m above the ground
and - is of a species that is not included on State or local area weed register.
A tree which meets any of these criteria is classified as a Regulated Tree.
Removal of a Regulated Tree which is urgently necessary for public safety, and maintenance pruning as defined by the draft LPP, are proposed to be exempt from requiring development approval.
The draft LPP guides the assessment of development applications received for tree-damaging activity or removal of a Regulated Tree and matters to be given regard including:
- Health, maturity, species, and location of the tree
- Possible safety risks due to tree limb failure and infrastructure and/or structural damage associated with the retaining the tree
- The location of the tree within the development site and capacity for a modified building design or subdivision to maximise tree retention.
