Will the RAF definitely be going ahead?

For the project to progress, funding partners need to be identified. Federal financial support will also be sought in the lead up to the upcoming elections and additional partnership opportunities will be investigated. A range of key stakeholders will be engaged to determine the level of support to ensure that the RAF will be a financially sustainable consideration both now and into the future.

The City recognises that to rigorously examine the feasibility of such a facility, a detailed business plan needs to be developed to review a number of considerations including site selection. The business case will be submitted to Council by July 2019.

Where will the funding come from?

The City is seeking federal financial support in the lead up to the upcoming elections and additional partnership opportunities will be investigated.

Conventional swimming pools require substantial ongoing financial subsidy to meet operational costs. The integration of a number of sporting and recreation facilities into a single integrated venue would provide economies of scale in services provision, capital cost and ongoing operational costs.

Further detail will be revealed with the completion of the feasibility study and business case.

We've been talking about needing a pool for years. Why are you doing more consultation now?

Our community have been talking about the need for a pool and other recreation facilities for a long time. Over the last fifteen years, more than a dozen studies, plans, polls and surveys have shown that our community supports improved recreation facilities within the City of South Perth, particularly an aquatic facility, gym and more indoor courts for sports like basketball and netball. This body of evidence, as well as feedback received through the City’s community visioning project, Vision2020, led to the inclusion of a strategy in our Strategic Community Plan 2017-2027, to plan for and promote the development of recreation and aquatic facilities to service community needs.

While previous feedback and consultation has been about the concept of having a pool within the City of South Perth, we now need to engage with our community specifically about this proposed RAF, which would be so much more than a pool.

Although this project is currently in its infancy and financial sustainability and partnership funding opportunities are the key focus of the feasibility study at this stage, the City would like to begin exploring our community's ideas and preferences for a RAF, to help inform the business case that will be presented to Council in July 2019.

Where can I find more information?

The most up to date and comprehensive information about the RAF project can be found on the City of South Perth website.

We will keep adding further information here on Your Say South Perth, including further opportunities to participate, as the stakeholder and community engagement progresses.
